Điểm khác biệt lớn nhất giữa hai cấu trúc chính là cấu trúc It + sb + Time + to V + O các bạn sử dụng to V, còn cấu trúc S + spend + Time + V-ing + O sử dụng V-ing. Khi chuyển đổi câu giữa hai cấu trúc này, học sinh phải đảm bảo nguyên tắc về thì của động từ.
